Judy F. Ham, Book Artist
Judy Ham was born , raised and educated later in life as a returning woman student in the midwest. She taught at Northern Illinois University, St. Francis College and for Westchester University in their Japanese Branch in Fukuoka, Japan, before moving to Maine in 1992.
A poet, she was gobsmacked when she first took a class in the Art of Bookmaking.... pasting anything anywhere had always been her first love. Her books are one-of-a-kind collages created from vintage photos, trade cards, buttons, buckles, knitting needles, threads and other unusual bitsof textural, inspirational junque she gleans from summer flea markets along Route 1 in Maine. She combines these finds with artist monoprints, rubberstamped words, bits of linen or felted wool, which are then pasted and sewn onto hand-decorated and handmade papers. These collages are an enticing way for to rescue and enjoy the little abandoned "nothings" of everyday life.
J. Ham lives in Sandy Point with her husband, a writer and artist. Their six very-adult children are currently scattered around the world.
