A CHRONOLOGICAL GENRE SUMMARY OF MAJOR WORKS BY JOHN UPDIKE
All of these works were published by Alfred A. Knopf Press in New York, except in the three cases where noted. This is a list only of American trade editions. Most works were also published in England and translations of several works were made into other European languages. Many special small printings of his poetry--both works included in the works cited below and a number not-- were published by several small presses in special editions. For notations concerning some of these, see Judie Newman, John Updike (New York: St. Martins Press, 1988), pp. 159-160. There are also numberous specially bound and printed publications of his earlier works by Knopf, Franklin Mint, and Easton Press.
The
finest source for this kind of information now available, however, is
unquestionably Jack De Bellis, John Updike: A Bibliography, 1967-1993
(Westport, CN: Greenwood Press, 1994). Pp. ix-355). This resource
is definitive for the period noted and for the range of publication information.
Anyone seriously interested in any form of Updike studies or research cannot
afford to be without it. An earlier book, John Updike: A
Bibliography (Kent State University Press, 1968), but C. Clarke Taylor,
covers with annotations the first phase of Updike's publishing career up
to 1967, including articles from his high school newspaper, The Chatterbox
(starting 1949) and from the Harvard Lampoon (starting
1951). An excellent discussion of each Updike work and a detailed life
chronology are also now available in Jack De Bellis' The John Updike
Enclyclopedia (Westport, CN: Greenwood Press,
2000). Pp. xxxiii-545). This is a splendid resource.
For a current bibliography of Updike criticism see James Yerkes, ed., John Updike and Religion: The Sense of the Sacred and the Motions of Grace (Grand Rapids, MI/Cambridge, UK: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 1999; Pp. vii-301. ), pp. 269-278. The book itself contains fifteen original essays in three sections: John Updike and the Religious Dimension, John Updike and the Christian Religion, John Updike and American Religion.
In addition, those who, like me, are collectors of John Updike's works should be aware of a resource which I have found exceedingly helpful. I refer to the John Updike Author Price Guide published by Quill & Brush Press, owned and operated by Patricia and Allen Ahearn. They produce author lists which provide chronologically organized bibliographical and publishing detail (first issues and first editions, limited editions, number of copies published, recent pricing levels, etc.). The last Updike list was prepared January 1998. The current list is 21 pages long and costs $12.00. It is a must for any serious collector, as well as a great help for those who shop in old bookstores for Updike works just for the fun of it.
You may write to them at Quill & Brush Press, P. O. Box 5365, Rockville, MD 20848. Their web home page address is: http://qbbooks.com Their email address is: firsts@qb.com.
