The Dark Side

The "B" class sloop "Finco" was as ugly as any Bahama built sailing boat can be. Which means that it was not all that beautiful. However none of her homeliness is evident when she's merely a silhouette against the brilliant afternoon sunshine. The real subject of this difficult painting is not the boat, although the action of her upwind smash is exciting. The real subject is how the sunshine in Elizabeth Harbour penetrates easily to the pure sandy bottom of the bay and reflects back upwards, almost more intense than the sky itself. When the dark shadow of "Finco's" abundant canvas passes by, light presses through beneath her keel and emerges on the lee side, emblazoning the scene with aquamarine light which makes it appear as if Finco is charging across the world's largest swimming pool!
